Mary's Restaurant and Bed & Breakfast

Summer Greetings

By: Carla Hays

Greetings customers and friends!  We trust you are now looking out at yards finally free from fallen limbs and trees, and that roofs have been repaired, and the storm in May is just a distant memory.  Clean-up has been a nightmare for many in and around Herrin, but now that we have experienced more than half the summer, life is getting back to normal.   Families are heading off to visit the ocean, a theme park, relatives in other states, or are just kicking back to enjoy what we have left of this wonderful season.

At Mary's, we are taking full advantage of the plentiful produce from the area.  First, there were succulent strawberries poured over flaky, home-made pastry, and topped with freshly whipped cream.  Next, came the blackberries.  We prepared the berries on the stove with sugar and vanilla, then dropped dumplings into the simmering concoction, and served this hot, delicious treat with ice cream.  Many commented on how it reminded them of meals their grandmothers prepared years ago.  Now that tomatoes are ripening, we plan to offer Caprese Salad with fresh mozzarella and fresh basil.  Peach Daiquiris are what everyone is impatient for, and just last week, the first peaches showed up from the orchards.  We are now offering  both Peach Daiquiris and Peach Margaritas!  Soon, our bread pudding will be stuffed with fresh Southern Illinois peaches as well.

Everyone is busy with travel or out-of-town guests, and we hope that you will include a visit to Mary's in your summer time plans.
