John Griswold's book
By: Carla Hays
Last Saturday, 7 November, I attended a book review/signing at the Herrin City Library. John Griswold, a Herrin native, spoke about his recent novel A Democracy of Ghosts. It is an account of Herrin's bloody massacre in 1922, and John's grandfather William Sneed, is at the heart of the story. What is interesting to note here, though, is that Mr. Sneed and his family lived at 501 S. Park Avenue, in the house that is now known as Mary's Bed and Breakfast! I intend to place a copy of Griswold's novel there for guests to read, and I have also placed a link on our website to John's journal. He writes under his own name, as well as the pen name Oronte Churm. There is a link on his website to purchase his book. I urge everyone with an interest in history, specifically Herrin history, to read this story.
