Mary's Restaurant and Bed & Breakfast

Spring 2009

By: Carla Hays

The pear blossoms are blanketing the sidewalks of Park Avenue like snow, but the sunny skies and warm temperatures let us know that winter is behind us now.  At Mary's Restaurant we are shopping for impatiens and geraniums to grace the front porch, brightening the path to our door.  We are anxiously awaiting the Farmer's Market next to the Chamber of Commerce, where we will purchase fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables to enhance our signature dishes, and to allow us to give our customers the unique quality that they expect from Mary's.  A recent restaurant periodical forecasted that in 2009 there will be a huge growth in that local market, and we embrace that nation-wide trend to offer several items on our menu that are grown right here in our own "back yard".

Many area high schools will be having their proms this month, and on into early May.  We are always happy to offer our Prom Special to students who choose to spend that special night with us.  For $70 per couple, a nice selection of entrees is available, complete with soup or salad, beverage of choice (unlimited tea, soda, water, fresh lime-ade), and dessert.  This price includes tax, tip, and each couple goes home with a framed photo to commemorate the evening!  Mary's is the ideal place to spend such a formal evening - the atmosphere, the service, and the Prom Special make it hard to imagine going anywhere else!

Mary's Celebrations

March 26 we welcomed Debbe Young (Stevens), a Herrin native, to our Bed and Breakfast.  She was in town from Kansas to visit with her sister Rhonda Pagano, who had also come to town from West Palm Beach, Florida.  The sisters were here to see family and friends, and to attend their niece's wedding.

On the 28th of March, Vicki and Frank Colombo hosted a "Cocktail/Slumber Party" at Mary's Bed and Breakfast.  In attendance were Keith and Theresa Camarato, Carl and Cookie Goodwin, Chuck and Janice Shahadey, Malcolm and Carol Zwick, David and Kathy Boston, and David and Carla Hays.  Guests were treated to wine and appetizers in the suite at the B & B.  Then it was a brisk walk next door for dinner at Mary's, followed by games and more wine afterwards with everyone dressed in their P.J.'s!  The Goodwins, Bostons, and Shahadeys stayed the night in the upstairs bedrooms, with Frank and Vicki in the suite.  The next morning found everyone back at Mary's for a breakfast with all the trimmings, including beignets just like they serve in the French Quarter down in New Orleans!

March 31, Mary's was the destination for an 18th birthday celebration for Chelsye Vincent.  Her parents, Neil and Cindy, hosted the event, which was attended by family and friends, including Chelsye's fiance Rob Fitts, and his parents David and Cheri.  Happy Birthday, Chelsye!

Enjoy this wonderful Southern Illinois spring, and we'll see you at Mary's!
